The Puttick family of Kirdford SSX

Joseph and Mary Jane Cawley [nee Puttick] were the parents of Mary Ellen who married Frank Cunningham Jaunay in Reims. The Putticks, originally from Sussex, provide a long string of ancestors with a lineage being traced back to Emery Puttocke and Elizabeth Knyght who were born in the late sixteenth century. Indeed Puttick is one of the oldest recorded names in the Petworth district of West Sussex During the reign of Edward I a John Pottuk was recorded as the principle tenant on the manor of Lee in Fittleworth. Other names within the Puttick lineage also feature in Tudor Rolls, Exchequer Accounts and Church Registers.

Mary Jane, daughter of John and Mary Puttick was born at West Cowes on the Isle of Wight 21 Mar 1833. and was baptised in the Castlehold Baptist Church on 25 May 1837. John Puttick, an auctioneer lived for a time in Saint Helier JSY from at least the 1841 Census to his death in 1876.

A significant problem arises in this research and the issue revolves around the common family history problem of same name, same time and same place!

I think John was born in Kirdford to Thomas and Jane in 1808 but unfortunately in the 1871 Census he is recorded as being born in Tillington SSX! Mary Ellen Jaunay (nee Cawley), his grand daughter and my great grandmother has recorded his birth in her birthday book as 12 October 1808. The filmed material for Kirdford lists a baptism of a John shortly after this date but it does not give the date of birth and hence the uncertainty:

Batch #070701 Kirdford SSX - John s/o Thomas & Jane 16 Oct 1808
Batch #070701 Kirdford SSX - John s/o John & Elizabeth 28 May 1809 (IGI suggests d. young)

Did John get it wrong? The problem is that I can find a Tillington birth for a John at about the right time too!
John Puttick son of William and Elizabeth nee Frances bapt 17 Feb 1811 All Saints Tillington SSX
This William Puttick operated the Queen's Head sometimes called the Puttick Inn at Upperton SSX just up the lane from Tillington.

Information received in Feb 2010 from a visitor to this page (3g-grandson of William) allows us to discount the Tillington family. John Puttick bapt 17 Feb 1811 (his 2g-grandfather) worked as a Postmaster Superintendant living in Newington London and his family is well documented.

Linking Thomas into the Kirdford Putticks is a little tenuous at this time. I can find a Thomas Puttick marrying a Jane Whittington at Kirdford in 1795 but the origins of Thomas are not all that clear. I can find such a man baptised in nearby Pulborough in 1795 but cannot link him back to the Kirdford Putticks with any certainty. Such work is difficult and expensive from afar!
